ADD, ADHD, & OTHER FAIRY TALES, Part II © C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D. There is no questioning my mind that the approach outlined in Pat I works for the vast majority of ADD and ADHD people. If that fails then read: HEALING ADD-The Breakthrough Program that Allows You to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADD, Daniel G. Amen, M.D., Berkley Books, NY, 2001. Dr. Amen describes 6 types of ADD: Classic-This actually would be called ADHD by most clinicians Inattentive---Mainly low attention span Overfocused---Excessively worrying, argumentative, negative and compulsive Temporal lobe---Quick tempered, panicked, angry, fearful Limbic---Moody, low energy low grade depression Ring of Fire---Hypersensitive, angry, aggressive, unpredictable, etc Dr. Amen diagnoses these variations mainly with the use of a SPEC scan (SINGLE PHOTON EMISSION COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY). These scans reveal over or under activity in various parts of the brain. Once diagnosed, his primary recommendations, except in Type 3_ are High protein, low carbohydrate diets, eating 3 meals a day and two snacks Minimize fruits and juices Increase omega-3 intake Type 3 are low in serotonin. They need more of a balance between protein and complex carbohydrate. I would suggest these individuals might benefit from a little tryptophan, B complex and lithium orotate! Dr. Amen has a section on his recommendations for supplements and EEG biofeedback for the various types. He also has a strong section on drugs, which I almost never would recommend. There are good discussions of psychosocial aspects of this disorder. As in Part I, I would not recommend the Amen approach, unless you have thoroughly tried everything discussed in Part I. I would even gradually increase the physical exercise component to a minimum of 3 hours of moderately active exercise daily before going the SPEC and drug route. Undoubtedly there are some who may need to go to the Amen clinic and I would certainly recommend that before allowing drugs! |
