AZENDA --S-ADENOSYL-METHIONINE, or SAM-e Early this year I was asked to evaluate SAM-e, specifically produced under the trade name, Azenda. I have done extensive review of the literature and of this product. And this is the first time I have publicly endorsed such a product. Why? Because I think the PharmacoMafia has conducted a truly evil approach to drug promotion, with minimal benefit and frequent complications. I do not receive any income from the sales of this product, so its promotion is not going to enrich me. However, I think it can help many individuals and should be considered the first choice of supplements for depression. Since 20% of Americans are on minimally helpful antidepressant drugs (7% better than placebo with a 25% complication rate), and another 20% are said to be clinically depressed, and another 40% are borderline depressed, depression is easily the most common disorder in the world. SAM-e is normally manufactured in the liver to the tune of 6 to 8 grams daily. It is used to detoxify the body of poisons, such as drugs, alcohol, pesticides, heavy metals, etc. It is critical in the normal production of serotonin, and dopamine, etc. It assists these other normal neurotransmitters in acting more efficiently. SAM-e assists in maintaining DNA, by providing an essential methyl group, one of the key metabolic biochemical factors in immune function. It is intimately involved in the complete transmutation of methionine to avoid excess homocysteine. SAM-e is a building block for glutathione, one of the key immune molecules. SAM-e has been studied since its discovery in Italy in 1952 and found to be AS EFFECTIVE AS antidepressant drugs without the complications. SAM-e levels are low in depressed individuals. Interestingly, in alcoholics, SAM-e not only treats the depression but also helps detoxify the body. Post-partum depression as well as menopausal distress responds well to SAM-e. It not only relieves depression in Parkinsonian patients, it helps reduce muscle tremors and anxiety. Some elderly patients with impaired memory respond well to SAM-e. It has also been helpful in fibromyalgia. There is some research to suggest it may have a beneficial effect in osteoarthritis. Why Azenda |
